Patrol Officer

 Essential Job Functions: Under general supervision, the line officers are the first officers to respond to a call and are charged with performing law enforcement duties; performs skilled law enforcement; does related work as required.

 Examples of Duties: The employee in this classification may not perform all of the duties listed below.  Depending upon assignment, duties may include but are not limited to, the following:

Patrol assigned areas within the limits of the Town of Saluda in a patrol car or on foot; assist new officers with learning the streets in the Town of Saluda; enforce local, State and Federal laws; respond to calls related to the protection of life and property, traffic incidents, and other required emergencies; prepare reports of arrests made, activities performed, and unusual incidents observed; conduct both preliminary and follow-up investigations of disturbances, criminal incidents, hazardous incidents, vehicle accidents, and deaths; make arrests; interrogate suspects and interview victims, complainants and witnesses; coordinate and conduct detailed investigations of violent crimes, child abuse, vice, gaming, and narcotics violations; testify and present evidence in court; provide backup assistance for other officers and personnel in this department and in other agencies as needed; collect, preserve, and maintain evidence, found property, and property for safekeeping until able to turn said items over to the proper supervisor; assist and advise motorist and enforce traffic safety laws by issuing citations and warnings; search, and transport prisoners; respond to demonstrations, riots, hostage situations, barricaded subjects, and other extremely hazardous situations; maintain contact with the public regarding potential law enforcement problems and preserve good relationships with the public; serve warrants and subpoenas; observe, monitor, direct, and control routine and unusual traffic conditions, check buildings for physical security, and administer first aid.

A Patrolman is accountable to a higher-ranking officer and for the effective supervision and operation of assigned police functions within departmental policies and guidelines. Patrolmen are expected to have a level of knowledge and ability in police work that will permit the handling of routine situations.
